Antwerp central station dances to The Sound of Music

Filed under: Antwerp, Art, Belgium, flashmob, music, railways, show, sound of music, station, theatre — Peter @ 11:01 pm

I missed it last Monday, but imagine taking a morning train and being treated to the sound of Music at Antwerp’s central station. The 200 dancers were promoting the Dutch TV version of “in search of Maria“, a BBC format, staged by the Belgian commercial VTM network.

  1. pretty freakin’ cool! Sorry I missed it. The train station looks so good now with the scaffolding down.

[Blog author: "It really does Cassie, the restoration has been very impressive, making it turn up on a top-ten list of most impressive stations. Although VTM-tv apparently mentioned the dance act on their website, all the morning train commuters were totally surprised, and impressed. Thanks for commenting from Leuven. "]

The CNN blog is at #1, I’m currently at #65 with this post today. Thank you all for passing by and posting your comments.

I’m convinced that after all the economic doom and gloom of the passed months, people want some honest joy to lift their spirits.

  12. I don’t care how old you are, where you live, or what your situation is…that’s EXACTLY the kind of thing the world needs in greater quantity. For those four minutes, all of those people (and afterward everyone who watched it) were connected on a very emotional level. Shared joy. Too cool for words.

  16. I have seen this video several times but everytime it makes my heart soar high and I can’t help singing along. I love this brilliant idea of bringing the dance and an old time favourite song to a public place like the train station on a Monday morning!! That’s the most brilliant promotional work I have come across!! Bet it perks up everyone and drove the Monday blues away!

[Blog author: "It sure remains an extremely uplifting video. Wish you could see Antwerp right now: half the city has left to spend their vacation abroad, or at least, out of this uplifting town ;-) "]

  19. I’ve already watched this video 20 times this morning, and I only was introduced to it yesterday in one my college classes about the importance of community, culture, music, dance, and art.

I can’t help smiling in agreement with the comments of joy, uplifting, inspiration, happiness, and simply pure delight in watching this, seeing this, feeling this, over, and over again.

The directors involved, the time to arrange the cameras, the negotiations with the Central Station staff, the tremendous unity of the song and it’s performers, and then above all, the inclusion of the audience in being able to watch and understand the joy flowing through the music and the performers back to the public in an open place…

If I had to die now, I would be dying happy knowing such inspiration and hope like this exists in the world.

    Never give up.

  22. God speaks loudly with love in beautiful unexpected moments! And such possibilities make all of life seem a gift. I watched this with much happiness some months ago. I came back to it today to watch it again. Truly a wonderful in every way — the music, the dancing, the mix of people, the footage editing. We all so often conform to what society expects of us, (which isn’t necessarily bad), but it’s also good to be shaken up at time with BEAUTIFUL things that are unexpected. This video reminds me of a modern version of William Wordsworth’s poem “Daffodils.” Perhaps all those involved in the planning, etc., did it for monetary recompense for some TV program, it is also a gift to the regular commuters who will never forget the thrill of having such a beautiful unexpected moment. Kudos to the person who included the footage of the surprised and delighted faces. Thanks for sharing the joy.

Providing them the kind of “unexpected experience” that makes one appreciate that really each moment can be viewed as a gift, and so all of life is a gift.
