Gay honeymoon in Turkey: Paris Hilton and lots of obnoxious Russians

Yes folks, we’re back home in good old Belgium, as I’m typing this post under a rather unexpected, clear blue Antwerp sky at 21°C/70°F. You know that feeling of slight derealization upon your return from a great vacation abroad?  It actually feels weird adapting to the familiar yet profoundly different surroundings of my Antwerp home after the past days exploring the south coast of Turkey.

This “gay honeymoon replacing vacation” in Turkey has been absolutely stunning: from the breathtaking sights and sounds of a country I’d visited quite often before to the changes that are visible to anyone who has spent time/vacations in Turkey over the past 15 years.

A quick recap to bring you up to date after ten days of radio silence: having a “gay honeymoon” appeared to be perfectly possible at the upscale seaside resort of Bodrum, Turkey: as long as you’re not Turkish [being gay in Turkey remains a social taboo for a native, especially outside Istanbul] or expect a cheering crowd of hotel staff, nobody will really care if you hold hands or show affection in public. There are limits though and obviously, a “classic gay nightlife” is nowhere to be found, but the degree of tolerance includes accepting topless women at the hotel pool. One of our Turkish hotel waiters clearly was gay and bent over backwards to please my SO. I stopped him :P

The numerous historic sites we visited were spectacular (although I’d seen them before), the “wow-level” of the prestigious 5* WOW Bodrum resort was truly breathtaking (wholeheartedly recommended at EUR 1,000/$ 1,500 a week in low season, do check out the WOW (World of Wonders) website), while I even managed (as it was the only realistic and mature approach) to completely ignore the omnipresent hordes of filthy rich, yet noisy, drunk and dumb/arrogant Russian tourists who have completely invaded the eastern Mediterranean coast the past five to ten years. One ‘fashion road kill’ Russian Paris Hilton lookalike (way too much jewelry, stiletto heels, blue ABBA-era make-up, mini-skirt short enough to show her sanitary pad: the full pathetic package) was so drunk on Vodka and Champagne that she bumped right into me with a full plate of fine Turkish delicacies. I laughed in her face, took her picture, followed by several more shots showing all the empty bottles she left behind. Free entertainment! ;-) [ Русские в Турции: богатых, наглых и пьян- Related blogpost: "Obnoxious Russians invade Turkey"].

Enjoy this first selection [please click to enlarge] out of 8 GB worth of photographs (almost 1,000 shots) and videos. Stay tuned, much more funny, unusual and moving images/ stories coming up. Feel free to share your vacation or honeymoon experiences in Turkey, even the straight ones :D [Update October 2nd: I've got a cold and some other medical issues that kept me from updating (Belgium: 10°C/50°F with heavy rain). I will post my Turkey pictures/stories as soon as I can comfortably spend longer periods in front of this pc. Thank you for holding.]

  1. As a gay travel agent in the U.S., I’m glad to read your glowing review of Bodrum. I’ve been there before and loved it, but wouldn’t really have considered it as a gay honeymoon destination. I do think it’s one of the best values on the Mediterranean, so if it’s gay-friendly as well … sounds like a great option!

Hope you’re going to post more details from the honeymoon. First-person accounts are a great resource for travel agents!

[Blog author: "Thanks for commenting from Miami. I already updated my post above with more details on the local gay scene. While there's absolutely nothing specifically gay about Bodrum (Only Istanbul has a real "gay nightlife"), it's a superb holiday destination with a live and let live atmosphere. For anyone looking for a classic gay honeymoon package (including a sparkling gay nightlife) I would definitely not recommend Turkey though, but the country's a perfect destination for a laid back gay-friendly vacation."]

  2. [...] Here’s a fresh account from two guys who just returned to Belgium after honeymooning in Bodrum, Turkey. I can vouch for the Turkish coast–the water is beautiful and the prices are often much lower than anything you’d find in a euro-denominated country. If I were booking the  trip for clients, I’d definitely combine the beach holiday with a few days in Istanbul, which I think is one of the most fascinating, historic cities in Europe. [...]

  3. Welcome Back!!! :)

I was in the city today, thinking that you guys were probably back, sure that you would have had a grand time. See you soon.

[Blog author: "Thanks Di! It was a superb experience and I'll make sure to get in touch soon. A warm hug from the both of us. "]

  4. Glad you are back and all in one piece. Grateful for their tolerance and that you didn’t have you heads or any other body part whacked off!

Welcome back to the same old grind, hope you are just glowing after the honeymoon! Can’t wait to see the pictures…of the city!

[Blog author: "You know Brenda, the Turks in Bodrum were more tolerant than the older migrant Turks in Antwerp: guess Turkey evolved, while many of the 1st generation Turks in this town are still holding on to their more traditional, rural-values view on life. Pictures coming up asap! "]

  5. Welcome home, Peter! Sounds fab … can’t wait to hear more. I am so happy it went well. But, 1000 pics!! Wow, I sure hope you had time for the honeymoon part. ;-) Seriously, can’t wait to see more. I’ve heard Turkey is a gorgeous spot. I confess I did think about emailing you and asking you to pick up a little rug for me … LOL

[Blog author: "Thanks Shirley! My friends and family said exactly the same: "1,000 shots? We're not going to look at that many", but rest assured, I'll post a "best of" selection. As for shopping: the amount of fake merchandise on sale was still mind-blowing (Turkey is not a European country): streets with countless shops only selling imitation brand clothes, leather items and anything that looks (but isn't) very exclusive. I resisted and did not buy any fake brands: I'm no fashion victim ;-) But the authentic rugs were nice, though all with rather classic, slightly dated patterns."]

  6. So happy to hear that everything went well. Can’t wait to see more pics!

[Blog author: "Thanks Mel. I now realize that working through 1,000 shots (and numerous videos) is basically a lot of work, but more images and stories coming up asap. I'm still not totally at ease facing the fact I'm actually back in rainy Belgium. "]

  7. Glad you’re back. 8gb of photos? You’re almost as bad as me!

[Blog author: "Thanks Simon. And yes, I should have considered that watching all those shots would become a labour of love: I shot 400 images in/around Bodrum Castle in one full single day and obviously, hardly anyone is willing to sit through this many pictures ;-) "]

  8. “One of our Turkish hotel waiters clearly was gay and bent over backwards to please my SO. I stopped him :P

ROFL! Sounds to me as though he was just looking for a good “tip.” Glad to hear you had such a nice time. As you may have read, it was a tough week for me last week, so I am just getting back into the swing of things. Not the lifestyle, mind you, as the wife would not go for that. Was that available in that resort as well?

[Blog author: "I'm convinced that waiter was happily married [gay men in Turkey tend to be married, with children due to strong social pressure], but then again, he was too kind and too persistent, given that my SO didn’t look or sound like a rich Russian, the noisiest nation ever to invade Turkey and Egypt. The resort was 99.99% straight, but the fun part became trying to spot that 0.01% ;-) We could have gone on an “all gay cruise”, but we’ve seen and sampled the all-gay beaches/resorts on the planet [Gran Canaria [SP, but in front of Southern Morocco], Key West [Fl, USA], Mykonos [GR], etc.] and felt really bored. We prefer our vacation destinations to be gay-friendly, not all-gay, which tends to add no value and induces a ghetto feeling we’re not looking for.

I’m behind my regular reading schedule and will catch up with your recent posts asap! “]

  9. And I thought you actually saw paris Hilton :(

But nice to hear you had a great time. You’re not the only one who has the cold. Everyone seems to be sick now, me included :(

[Blog author: "Viral infections sure are spreading like wildfire in Belgium at present Manic: the "welcome to Belgium" 10°C/50°F cold rain (near freezing at night) is making the experience even worse.

I know how you must be feeling, I got in/out of bed, without the energy to browse my 1,000 vacation pictures for a new post. The arrogant Russian Paris Hilton look-alike was fun though, she was dead serious but basically looked like fashion road kill ;-) "]

  10. We just got through the first colds of the season… I am sorry to hear it’s making the rounds across the ocean too. Get lots of rest and feel better soon!

[Blog author: "Thanks Mel. It actually all got worse due to interaction with the issues I suffered in 2007, along with weird new symptoms. Hospital check tomorrow. I'll keep you posted."]

  11. Here’s a question for you: Are Europeans usually so adventurous in their honeymoon choices? Here in the States, OutTraveler just published its list of Top 5 spots for homo honeymoons, and it read, for the most part, like a circuit party sampler: Hawaii, Provincetown, Montreal, Santa Fe, Puerto Vallarta. (See http://travelgaygent.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/top-5-homo-honeymoon-spots-really/) It would be like European couples restricting themselves to Brighton, Ibiza, and Mykonos!

[Blog author: "Brighton sounds truly horrible :P Well, I did visit Mykonos ("super paradise beach" was the most outrageous place with 500 gay men on a nude beach: we left that "please watch me" location asap) and spent time in Puerto Vallarta (avoided the 'gay' beach and focused on discovering Jalisco state with a rental car). Like you pointed out, those party circuit locations might be the choice for some, but it's not my/our style. As for being adventurous: the Dutch have a historic tendency to be adventurous while Dutch speaking Belgians have the added advantage of speaking multiple languages, making the world a much more accessible place ;-) "]
