Sinatra does Antwerp

Although Frank Sinatra died way back in 1998, I had the distinct impression hearing his voice last Saturday, right in front of Antwerp cathedral. Yes, I finally got a lucky break after the Naked08 debacle and wound up on elevated, open air VIP seats (white leather lounge couches!), enjoying an exclusive preview of www.barblue.be, a classy blues/jazz/classical presentation accompanied by selected wines and gourmets snacks. When the local singer started a near-perfect rendition of Andy Williams’ “Moon river” during yesterday’s sultry evening weather and sunset, well, I just melted. Hardly anything beats the classics at moments like these. “You’re getting old”, my s/o said, and promptly fell asleep ;-)

  1. There are disadvantages to sitting on a comfy sofa, drinking wine, and listening to jazz on a sultry night. One can become too mellow, as your s/o demonstrated. You should have given him a passionate kiss to remember when he dozed off and that would have woken him up. ; )

  2. I could given him a passionate kiss Veronica, but a TV camera crew stopped me.

You know how it goes in a liberal town like Antwerp: before you know it the local gay-friendly TV station is broadcasting that kiss as a ‘feel good’ fade out on the nightly news ;-)

  4. Thanks Claudia ;-) My s/o used to be an all-action type (”I need another chainsaw to demolish this building’), but lately any performance resembling “Moon River” makes him fall asleep on the spot.

There’s a loud Amnesty outdoor benefit concert tomorrow near Antwerp townhall: although my dearest s/o just loves the +100 dB noise, the upcoming rain at 50°F/10°C will probably stop his from attending. I may post some shots if the rain is not too bad.

  5. LOL on your SO. Blame it on the wine and lack of activity. It often does the same to me in similar circumstances. Now that would be something if you became the fade out on the nightly news! It would be like that little girl in the Coppertone ads … you’d be forever caught in that time and place, never growing any older–they could use the “feel good” spot for years. Hey, not a bad thing. I love Moon River! Such a classic and I normally don’t even like that genre of music, but there are some of those songs that always seem just right. (Maybe it also has something to do with the fact that you don’t hear them 20 times a day either, like some other music.)

  6. I love these classics too Shirley: a glass of wine, Sinatra singing ‘Strangers in the night’: I’m sold.

Well, I’m glad the local TV station around the corner ( http://www.atv.be ) is part of a gay-friendly network, airing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer_as_Folk_(US_TV_series) and reflecting the generally very gay friendly atmosphere in Antwerp.

But becoming the feel good fade-out on a TV channel might stretch it a little too far - I do like what is left of my privacy :-)
