Hey, who needs Disney? A 20 sec delay covers the Antwerp city Christmas ice-skating rink with digital snow ;-)
I’m sure many of you loved ‘Skating/dancing with the stars”, but isn’t skating yourself much more fun?
[Photos shot tonight with my camera phone in front of City Hall, Antwerp, Belgium, 5°C/40°F. Snow until Jan 2nd]

  1. I agree, skating is great. I’m hoping our lakes here freeze soon so I can take my kids skating.

  2. You know furiousball, that’s what many of us can no longer remember: an authentic winter, along with frozen lakes and snow that lasts. Belgium has a moderate sea-climate, with hardly any snow or real cold winters.

Anyway, for the time being just watching all that magical skating fun in front of my door is as close as I will get to a real winter experience. [Update: I just noticed a high processor load as the 'fake snow' is being generated.]

  3. My son attends rock night every Friday which is held at the local skating rink for kids ages 9-13. It’s done by disco lights and DJ’d and supervised by the local PD (they lock the doors at 7 sharp and kids are not allowed to enter or exit after) allowing the parents to feel safe with letting their children experience some fun with their friends with out parents on premises. (And let’s us catch a drink and/or a movie while they do).

I haven’t skated since Belgium. We used to skate at the Poseidon in Woluwe. :)

  6. My pleasure Claudia! It’s always great noticing how many places we are both familiar with in Belgium.

  8. Thanks Veronica. It’s weird though, someone at Antwerp city is checking this blog on a daily basis. I wonder why :P

  9. If you think that you are nonprofessional photographer, or you just need to capture better photos, there are many things you can do to enhance your photos. Read these advices that can help you to improve your using to the digital camera.
    Get Ready
All your photography tools must be always ready to use. Gather everything you’ll need into one place. Make sure to get a camera bag it well make much easier to you, because in it you can keep every thing that you well need and carry it with you. Make sure that every thing in its place.

  10. LOL Yoesef - you have no idea: I couldn’t stop myself from laughing after reading your professional guidance :P

If you would have spent 5 second reading my post, you sure must have noticed that “my tools are always ready to use”, especially if you consider that I took +200 night-shots with a low-ISO camera phone. Actually, I find my own shots quite stunning, given the extremely low light conditions, the very basic phone camera and the fast moving crowd.

And maybe you carry your cam-phones in a “large bag” over in Jordan (where you junk-posted from with a spam URL), but most of the planet doesn’t.

Do send me some camel shots from Amman! I’ll get you some snow :-)

  11. I think your whole site has really great photos and these are really fun and totally capture the feeling of outdoor ice skating with a holiday feel. I have only skated a handful of times in my life (and poorly when I did LOL). It’s rare for us to get enough cold weather in VA for ponds and lakes to freeze for safe ice skating. We do have an indoor ice skating rink now in the town nearby, but I like the romance of outdoor skating … braving the elements, seeing the scenery around you, etc. I’d like to beam myself over and do some ice skating :-) !

  12. Thanks Shirley! It’s always a pleasure to get a comment originating in VA, my favorite US state ;-)

Wouldn’t that be fun: ‘ocean hopping’ - unfortunately it takes a very long, boring flight to enjoy the pleasures of the American (or Belgian) outdoors. If you’re into blogs from VA expats, do check out ‘V-Grrrl in the Middle’, over at my blogroll.

Update: I noticed you posted from King George, VA, making you a possible acquaintance of Veronica.

  13. Hey Peter–Yes, I am Veronica’s former neighbor … I should have mentioned that. I post on her blog fairly often, so I enjoy your posts there, too. :-)
