US conservative media: the power of induced fear

After a sweeping defeat in the recent US mid-term elections, conservative America is hitting back in a relentless ongoing effort to induce fear in the hearts of all American citizens. If you’re living in the States, CNN (America, we get a slightly more ‘moderate’ CNN Europe from London) will be airing “exposed, the extremist agenda” on Wednesday Nov 15 at 7 PM, presented by right-wing hawk Glenn Back,glenn_beck.jpg a close friend of G. W. Bush and well known conservative hate merchant. If you’re not familiar with the propaganda/tabloid TV Glenn Back is known for, just take a took at glennback.com or the rather disgusting trailer-with-child in this promo video

There is currently a petition online to stop these extremist invading US network news and ‘urge the US media to stop allowing these hate merchants to spread their venom and abuse’.

But the mainstream US media keep on pushing the same message, over and over again: “you’re in danger, be afraid, accept the loss of your constitutional rights for your own safety“.

Isn’t fear a wonderful emotion?

Related: from the AP newswire, Nov 14, 2006: ‘US: Immigrants may be held indefinitely: ‘

“Immigrants arrested in the United States may be held indefinitely on suspicion of terrorism and may not challenge their imprisonment in civilian courts, the Bush administration said Monday, opening a new legal front in the fight over the rights of detainees. In court documents filed with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., the Justice Department said a new anti-terrorism law being used to hold detainees in Guantanamo Bay also applies to foreigners captured and held in the United States.”

In plain English this means that if the Bush admin doesn’t like your face or opinion as a foreigner, they can simply ’suspect’ you of terrorism and hold you indefinitely in jail.

No wonder Europeans are entirely avoiding the US as a vacation destination.
